Curriculum

Early Years

Key Stage 1 & 2

Early Years

Our aim is to offer, through a rich, stimulating and safe environment, those opportunities relevant to the individual child's requirements and stages of development.

As educators we aim to develop the full potential of the children in our care through our own motivation and enthusiasm.  We aim to stimulate and further their ability through a broad and balanced curriculum where learning experiences take place naturally through exploration, investigation and play.

Our philosophy is to foster values such as kindness, consideration, tolerance and cooperation in a bid to produce happy, enthusiastic, confident children ready to encounter the 'ups and downs' of main school.

Our Early Years curriculum aims to encourage independence, self expression and an enthusiasm towards education which will continue through the childs' time at the Madras VA School.

The curriculum is based on the DFES document 'Desirable Outcomes' and we plan and assess the 6 areas of learning:

  1. Personal & Social Development

  2. Language, Literacy & Communication

  3. Mathematical Development

  4. Knowledge & Understanding of the World

  5. Physical Development

  6. Creative Development

Key Stage 1 & 2

The children learn the 3 core subjects - language, maths and science - and the foundation subjects - information & communication technology, Welsh, geography, history, design technology, religious education, physical education, art & craft, personal & social education.

To consolidate the topic work in geography and/or history educational visits are organised for the pupils to gain a practical understanding complimentary to the classroom work.

Within the early years and infant departments new changes are underway with the introduction of the foundation stage.  Further details are available from the class teachers or the office.
